Build-Up Play Patterns

Effective attacking in FC 28 starts with your build-up play rather than individual skill moves or sprint speed. The most successful players in higher divisions use deliberate passing patterns to pull defenders out of position before attempting the final ball. Start your attacks from the back by passing out from your goalkeeper to your centre-backs, then work the ball through your midfield using short, low-risk passes. This patient approach forces your opponent to press higher, which naturally creates space behind their defensive line for through balls and runs.

The triangle passing pattern is one of the most effective build-up techniques in the game. Identify a triangle of three nearby players and pass between them quickly using one-touch passes with L1 plus X on PlayStation or LB plus A on Xbox. This rapid combination play moves the ball faster than your opponent can switch defenders, creating openings in their formation. Practice using the right side triangle of your right-back, right midfielder, and right striker to stretch the defensive shape before switching play to the opposite flank where space has opened up.

Advanced Finishing Techniques

Converting chances is where matches are won and lost. The most overpowered finishing technique in FC 28 is the driven shot, performed by pressing R1 plus circle on PlayStation or RB plus B on Xbox. Driven shots travel faster and lower, making them extremely difficult for goalkeepers to save. Use driven shots from inside the box when facing the goalkeeper head-on, especially when your striker has high shooting stats and the angle is tight against the near post.

Finesse shots remain deadly from outside the box, particularly with players who have the Finesse Shot Plus playstyle. To execute a finesse shot, hold R1 while shooting and aim for the far corner. The optimal distance for finesse shots is between twenty and twenty-five yards from goal, and left-footed players should shoot from the right side of the pitch while right-footed players should position themselves on the left. Chip shots are situationally powerful when the goalkeeper rushes out. A well-timed chip over an advancing keeper is almost impossible to save and is one of the most satisfying goals you can score in the entire game. Master all three finishing types and you will convert significantly more of your chances into goals throughout every Weekend League and Rivals session.
